अकल्पनीय बलिदान — AN UNIMAGINABLE SACRIFICE
कोई कल्पना भी नहीं कर सकता, ऐसा कार्य इस वीरांगना ने कर दिखाया। नीरा आर्या ने देश के लिए अपने पति तक को त्याग ही नहीं दिया वरन् नेताजी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस के जीवन की रक्षा करने के लिए अपनी मांग का सिन्दूर मिटाने का निर्णय लेने में एक क्षण की देर नहीं की। क्रान्ति- इतिहास में ऐसी घटना इकलौती होगी। परन्तु ऐसी वीरांगना को सत्ता की मलाई चाटने वालों ने बिलकुल भुला दिया।
One can hardly imagine such an act, but this brave woman made it possible. Neera Arya not only gave up her husband for the sake of the nation, but she also did not hesitate for a moment to wipe away the sindoor of her marriage in order to save the life of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Such an incident is perhaps unique in the history of revolutionary movements. Yet, those who enjoyed the comforts of power completely forgot this courageous woman.

नीरा का जन्म 5 मार्च 1902 को उत्तर प्रदेश के बागपत जिले के खेकड़ा गाँव में हुआ। बहुत छोटी उम्र में ही उनके माता-पिता चल बसे। तब सेठ छज्जू राम आर्य ने उन्हें और उनके भाई बसन्त को गोद ले लिया। नीरा और बसन्त दोनों भाई-बहिन आजाद हिन्द फौज के सदस्य बने तब क्या इसे आर्यसमाजी परवरिश का फल नहीं मानेंगे? निश्चित ही अनेक अन्य क्रान्तिकारियों की तरह ये दोनों भाई-बहिन भी महर्षि दयानन्द के राष्ट्रीय विचार ‘राष्ट्र प्रथम’ के साधक थे।
नीरा का विवाह ब्रिटिश पुलिस के जासूस अफसर श्रीकान्त जयरंजन दास से हुआ। वे नेताजी सुभाष चन्द्र बोस की जासूसी कर रहे थे। एक बार नेताजी के तम्बू के समक्ष जब पहरा देने की बारी नीरा की आई तब अचानक श्रीकान्त नेताजी को गोली मारने आ पहुँचा। नीरा ने नेताजी को बचाने के लिए रायफल की संगीन से अपने पति को मार दिया। नेताजी ने उन्हें “नीरा नागिनी” नाम दिया और आजाद हिन्द फौज की पहली महिला जासूस बना दिया।
Neera Arya was born on 5 March 1902 in Khekra village of Baghpat district, Uttar Pradesh. Her parents passed away when she was very young. After that, Seth Chhajju Ram Arya adopted her and her brother Basant. Later, both Neera and Basant became members of the Azad Hind Fauj (Indian National Army). It would not be wrong to say that this spirit was the result of their Arya Samaj upbringing. Like many other revolutionaries, these siblings were inspired by the national ideals of Maharshi Dayanand, who emphasized the principle of “Nation First.”
Neera was married to Shrikant Jayaranjan Das, an officer who worked as a spy for the British police. He was secretly gathering information about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Once, when Neera was on guard duty outside Netaji’s tent, Shrikant suddenly arrived to shoot Netaji. To save him, Neera killed her own husband with the bayonet of a rifle. After this incident, Netaji gave her the name “Neera Nagini” and appointed her as the first woman spy of the Azad Hind Fauj.

आजाद हिन्द फौज के समर्पण के बाद इन्हें पति की हत्या के आरोप में काले पानी की सजा हुई थी, यानी अण्डमान की सेलुलर जेल। वहाँ अंग्रेजों ने नेताजी का पता पूछा, लेकिन नीरा ने थूक दिया। जेलरों ने चाबुक मारा, भूखा रखा और उनके सीने को चीरने की कोशिश की। फिर भी नीरा नहीं झुकीं।
After the surrender of the Azad Hind Fauj, Neera Arya was arrested and sentenced to “Kala Pani” (transportation for life) in the Cellular Jail of the Andaman Islands for the charge of killing her husband. In prison, the British tortured her brutally and tried to force her to reveal Netaji’s whereabouts. She was whipped, kept hungry, and subjected to severe cruelty, but she never revealed any information.

1947 में देश आजाद हुआ, लेकिन नीरा को कोई इनाम या पेंशन नहीं मिली। इन्होंने जीवन के अन्तिम दिनों में फूल बेचकर गुजारा किया और फलकनुमा, हैदराबाद में एक झोंपड़ी में रहीं। वृद्धावस्था में बीमारी की हालत में चार मीनार के पास उस्मानिया अस्पताल में इन्होंने रविवार 26 जुलाई, 1998 में एक गरीब, असहाय, निराश्रित, बीमार वृद्धा के रूप में मौत का आलिंगन कर लिया।
India became independent in 1947, but Neera Arya received neither recognition nor a pension from the government. In the last years of her life, she survived by selling flowers and lived in a small hut in Falaknuma, Hyderabad. In old age, suffering from illness and poverty, she passed away on Sunday, 26 July 1998, in Osmania Hospital near Charminar, Hyderabad—like a poor, helpless, and abandoned old woman.

This brave woman sacrificed every comfort of life, her husband, and her family for the freedom of the nation. What did the country give her in return? She gave everything for our independence, yet we forced her to live an anonymous and neglected life.
