पंजाब की मिट्टी में 24 मई 1896 की भोर कुछ अलग ही थी। लुधियाना जिले के छोटे से गाँव सराभा में एक बालक ने जन्म लिया। जिसके भाग्य में उम्र नहीं, उद्देश्य लिखा था। पिता सरदार मंगल सिंह और माता साहिब कौर ने उसे संस्कार दिए, पर देश ने उसे संकल्प दे दिया। बालक करतार की आँखों में किताबों से पहले अन्याय का सवाल उतर आया था। अन्याय जो ब्रिटिश सत्ता भारतीयों पर कर रही थी।
युवा होते-होते वह पढ़ाई के लिए अमेरिका पहुँचा। वहाँ की आधुनिकता ने उसे चकाचौंध नहीं दी, वरन् यह बोध दिया कि पराधीनता सबसे बड़ा अभिशाप है। यही वह धरती थी जहाँ प्रवासी भारतीयों के बीच आजादी का ज्वार उठ रहा था। इसी ज्वार से जन्मी गदर पार्टी, और करतार सिंह सराभा उसके सबसे प्रखर ज्वालामुखी थे।
The morning of 24 May 1896 in the soil of Punjab was special. In the small village of Sarabha in Ludhiana district, a child was born whose destiny carried not a long life but a great purpose. His father Sardar Mangal Singh and mother Sahib Kaur gave him good values, but the nation gave him a mission. Even as a boy, Kartar’s mind was filled not only with books but also with questions about the injustice that the British rule was imposing on Indians.
As he grew older, he went to America for his studies. The modern world there did not attract him with luxury; instead, it made him realize that slavery is the greatest curse for any nation. It was on this land that a wave of freedom began rising among Indians living abroad. From this wave was born the Ghadar Party, and Kartar Singh Sarabha became one of its most passionate young revolutionaries.

”गदर“ सिर्फ अखबार नहीं था, वह हुँकार था और विद्रोह का घोष। करतार की कलम आग बन गई। उसके गीतों में मातृभूमि की पुकार थी, और हर पंक्ति में बलिदान की तैयारी। गदर के उप-सम्पादक के रूप में उन्होंने इस पत्र को क्रान्ति की आवाज बना दिया।
The newspaper “Ghadar” was not just a publication; it was a call for rebellion. Kartar’s pen turned into fire. His writings and songs carried the voice of the motherland, and every line reflected a readiness for sacrifice. As the assistant editor of the Ghadar newspaper, he helped turn it into a powerful voice of revolution.

फिर आया वह निर्णायक मोड़, भारत लौटने का संकल्प। इनको समझाया गया कि भारत लौटने में पकड़े जाने का भय है। परन्तु करतार तो भारत माँ को बेड़ियों से मुक्त कराने को मचल रहे थे। प्रथम विश्वयुद्ध की आपाधापी को सही अवसर जान, देश में सशस्त्र विद्रोह की योजना बनी। सराभा लौटे; गुप्त सभाएँ हुईं, हथियारों की व्यवस्था, सैनिकों में जागरण- सब कुछ समय के विरुद्ध दौड़ता हुआ। पर अंग्रेजी हुकूमत की जासूसी तेज थी और हमारे यहाँ गद्दारों की कमी न थी। योजना भेद दी गई। गिरफ्तारियाँ शुरू हुईं। करतार पकड़े गए, पर टूटे नहीं।
Then came the decisive moment—the resolve to return to India. Many people warned him that returning to India could lead to arrest. But Kartar was eager to free Mother India from the chains of slavery. When World War I began, the revolutionaries saw it as the right opportunity to start an armed uprising in India. Kartar returned home. Secret meetings were held, weapons were arranged, and efforts were made to awaken Indian soldiers against British rule. Everything was moving quickly against time.
But the British intelligence network was strong, and there were also traitors among Indians. The plan was revealed. Arrests began. Kartar Singh Sarabha was captured, but he did not lose courage.

लाहौर षड्यंत्र केस। अदालत। अभियोग। सबूत। पर एक उन्नीस वर्ष के युवक की निर्भीक आँखें सत्ता से बड़ी थीं। उन्होंने कहा- ‘देश के लिए मरना अपराध है तो मैं अपराधी हूँ।’
16 नवम्बर 1915- फाँसी का दिन। रस्सी कसी, पर आवाज नहीं दबी।
करतार सिंह सराभा की मृत्यु अन्त नहीं थी; वह शुरुआत थी, उन असंख्य युवाओं की, जिनके लिए आजादी किताब नहीं, कर्म बनी। आज भी जब इतिहास साँस लेता है, सराभा की धड़कन सुनाई देती है- कम उम्र, विशाल साहस, और अमर संकल्प।
Then came the Lahore Conspiracy Case—the court, the charges, and the evidence. Yet the fearless eyes of a nineteen-year-old youth appeared stronger than the power of the empire. He boldly declared:
“If dying for my country is a crime, then I am guilty.”
On 16 November 1915, the day of execution arrived. The rope tightened, but his voice and spirit could not be silenced.
The death of Kartar Singh Sarabha was not an end; it was the beginning. It inspired countless young Indians for whom freedom became not just an idea in books but a duty in action. Even today, when history breathes, the heartbeat of Sarabha can still be heard—a young age, immense courage, and an immortal resolve.
