The story of India’s freedom struggle is truly the story of young men who shaped their lives through ideals, faith, and sacrifice. Ashfaqulla Khan was one such revolutionary whose life proved that patriotism does not belong to any one religion; it is the call of the soul.

अशफ़ाक़ उल्ला ख़ाँ का जन्म 22 अक्तूबर 1900 को उत्तर प्रदेश के शाहजहाँपुर नगर में हुआ। उनके पिता शफ़ीक़ उल्ला ख़ाँ एक साधारण व्यक्ति थे। माता एक स्नेहिल, संस्कारवान गृहिणी थीं।
Ashfaqulla Khan was born on 22 October 1900 in Shahjahanpur, in present-day Uttar Pradesh. His father Shafiqulla Khan was a simple and respected person, and his mother was a loving and cultured homemaker who gave him strong moral values.

युवावस्था में अशफाक का जीवन निर्णायक मोड़ तब लेता है, जब वे रामप्रसाद बिस्मिल के सम्पर्क में आते हैं। यह सम्पर्क केवल दो व्यक्तियों की मित्रता नहीं था, बल्कि दो विचारधाराओं का मिलन था। बिस्मिल के राष्ट्रवादी विचार, कविताएँ और निर्भीकता ने अशफ़ाक़ के भीतर छिपे क्रान्तिकारी को जगा दिया। यहीं से एक साधारण युवक क्रान्तिकारी अशफ़ाक़ उल्ला ख़ाँ में परिवर्तित हो गया। उनका नाम इतिहास में विशेष रूप से काकोरी काण्ड (9 अगस्त 1925) से जुड़ा है। अंग्रेज सरकार के खज़ाने को लेकर जा रही ट्रेन को रोकना एक सुनियोजित और साहसिक कार्य था। योजना के अनुसार ट्रेन रोकी गई, परन्तु एक गम्भीर संकट सामने आया, खजाने के बक्से का ताला किसी से टूट नहीं रहा था। समय कम था, शोर बढ़ सकता था और पूरी योजना विफल होने का खतरा था।
A decisive turning point in Ashfaqulla’s life came when he met Ram Prasad Bismil. Their relationship was not just a friendship between two individuals; it was the meeting of two patriotic minds. Bismil’s nationalist ideas, poetry, and fearless character awakened the revolutionary spirit within Ashfaqulla. From that moment, an ordinary young man began transforming into a committed revolutionary.
His name is especially connected with the Kakori train robbery on 9 August 1925. The revolutionaries planned to stop a train carrying the British government’s treasury. According to the plan, the train was stopped, but a serious problem arose—the lock of the treasury chest could not be broken easily. Time was running out, and there was a danger that the whole plan might fail.

उसी क्षण अशफ़ाक़ आगे आए। वे लम्बे, गठीले और शारीरिक रूप से अत्यन्त सक्षम थे। उन्होंने बिना विलम्ब अपने कन्धों पर यह दायित्व लिया। पूरे आत्मबल और शक्ति के साथ उन्होंने वह ताला तोड़ा।
कांकोरी के बाद उनका जीवन संघर्ष, पलायन और गुप्त गतिविधियों से भर गया। वे लम्बे समय तक गिरफ्तारी से बचे रहे, परन्तु अंततः पकड़े गए। अंग्रेजी अदालत में मुकदमा चला। उन्हें फाँसी की सजा सुनाई गई।
At that moment, Ashfaqulla stepped forward. He was tall, strong, and physically powerful. Taking responsibility without hesitation, he used his strength and determination to break open the lock.
After the Kakori incident, his life was filled with struggle, secret movements, and efforts to avoid arrest. For a long time he escaped the British authorities, but he was eventually captured. A trial was held in the British court, and he was sentenced to death.

A Legacy of Patriotism
19 दिसम्बर 1927 को, मात्र 27 वर्ष की आयु में, अशफ़ाक़ उल्ला ख़ाँ हँसते-हँसते फाँसी के फंदे पर चढ़ गए। अंतिम समय तक उनके मन में कोई पश्चाताप नहीं था। केवल यह संतोष था कि वे देश के लिए मर रहे हैं। ऐसे वीर-धीर को कृतज्ञ राष्ट्र का नमन।
On 19 December 1927, at the age of only 27, Ashfaqulla Khan bravely accepted the gallows with a smile. Until the very end, he had no regret—only the satisfaction that he was giving his life for the freedom of his country.
